Reviews:
"Since the appearance of the first volume in this series in 1987, The Doctrine of the Knowledge of God, many have been eagerly awaiting its sequel. This volume’s central motif is that “God is Lord of the covenant.” Frame demonstrates “how all of the acts, attributes, and personal distinctions that Scripture attributes to God are expressions of his lordship.” This approach focuses “our salvation without ignoring or denying the large amount of biblical teaching on the nature and acts of God.” There is a wealth of well-written material in this nearly 1000-page work of theology. Well worth the effort to read and study the works of John Frame."
Biblical Worldview (May 2003)
"This enormous volume, the third of four projected in the series, is Reformed theology at a high level, a masterpiece of clear, biblically based scholarship. Frame is an evangelical Emil Brunner, comprehensible and thoroughly conversant with philosophical issues that pertain to his subject.
The book is divided into six parts and 30 chapters, with nine appendices, most of them reviews of books on God, including responses to critics of his earlier volume on the knowledge of God. Frame addresses such current issues such as open theism, process theology, feminism, and evolution.
As Frame wrote in his preface, “I envision these books as seminary-level texts that will be helpful to pastors and also to lay Christians who have done some college-level study.” Parts are soundly Bible-based and accessible to the average reader, but other parts are so heavily philosophical they will elude all but seasoned scholars. This book would be a marvelous postgraduate course for pastors and scholars, but it is, as Frame said, “not for everybody.”
Reviewer LRK, Church Libraries (Winter 2002-03)
"The doctrine of God has been the subject of significant revision in recent years, as some evangelicals have raced to embrace what is styled the “Openness of God.” Others have responded with force, arguing that this new model of God and divine activity is nothing less than a repudiation of the God of the Bible.
In The Doctrine of God; A Theology of Lordship, John M. Frame authors one of the most important volumes on the doctrine of God to be released in this generation. Frame, who teaches at Reformed Theological Seminary, here builds on his previous work, The Knowledge of God, both published by P&R Publishing. Frame demonstrates originality of thought in light of contemporary challenges while remaining true to the church’s historic affirmation of biblical theism. “Our message to the world must emphasize that God is real, and that He will not be trifled with,” insists Frame. The overarching theme of the work is Lordship and Frame helps to explain why a sufficient doctrine of God is necessary for a genuine affirmation of Lordship."
