Publisher's Comments:
This original and comprehensive work is designed primarily as a first introduction to the Jewish literature of the so-called "intertestamental" period. Employing the methods of modern biblical interpretation, it focuses on the broad and central issues of this literature, treating the documents not simply as a summary of ideas, doctrines, and information, but as historical literature with shape and generic parallels and purpose. In chronological sequence, Nickelsburg discussed works from the late Persian period to the Second Revolt (ca. 400 b.c.e. -- 140 c.e.).
He begins each chapter with a capsule history of a segment of the period. These short introductions touch only on matters necessary for a basic understanding of the literature discussed in the chapter. Nickelsburg avoids long discussions of technical details in tracing the history within the context of which the literature is to be read, always seeking to guide the reader directly into the content of each book. When dating is questionable, the issues and alternatives are presented.
Bibliographies and notes at the end of chapters provide resources for more detailed study of the historical data. Scholars, including clergy; college, university, and seminary students; and all who have worked with the early Jewish writings will appreciate at once the brilliance of Nickelsburg's orderly presentation and comprehensive treatment of this large and complex body of literature. .
Reviews:
"The organization of this book is excellent, especially for classroom use. There is no doubt that this is the best introduction to the intertestamental literature now available, and it will probably remain so for a long time."
John J. Collins, Catholic Biblical Quarterly
"This book will prove invaluable to many different readers: scholars of the period, new students of the Bible and of ancient Near Eastern religions, students of social and cultural anthropology, and nonprofessional readers too. And clergy will finally have ready at hand a book to use in explaining this literature that has such a fascination for many members of synagogue and church.
Walter Harrelson, Vanderbilt University
